In the article "'The Answer to Criminal Aggression is Retaliation': Stand-Your-Ground Laws and the Liberalization of Self-Defense" Wyatt Holliday explains how the "Stand Your Ground" laws "have the common feature of strengthening legal protection for those who use deadly force in self-defense" (407). One instance showcasing the "Stand Your Ground" law is the story of John McNeil. In the article "How a Black Businessman Was Sentenced To Life In Prison For A Likely Self-Defense Killing." Nicole Flatow illustrates how McNeil, who is serving a life sentence should not be incarcerated due to the clarity of the evidence of that day on the 6th of December 2005. Here is a man who received a call from his teenage son who was home with his ailing mother, and Mr. McNeil wife. While a man is in there back yard, who once did work for him acting irate, and strange. This man called 911 before returning home after the distressed call. Yet upon getting to his home Mr. McNeil encountered the knife wielding man, who then charged him and upon firing a warning shot, he was forced to have to shoot this man who was on his property threatening his family. There for after showing that he not only called the authorities to assist in this, he was forced as a property owner, and a family man to "Stand His Ground". Yet he was penalized with a life sentence for doing so.
